La plaza del Desierto fue centro vital de la localidad, por ser lugar de ocio y encuentro de la población obrera barakaldesa.  Allí estaba el mercado municipal, las oficinas de Altos Hornos de Vizcaya, la estación de ferrocarril y, sobre todo, aquel kiosko de la música, que suponía un ruptura con todo aquel mundo de casas baratas, cooperativas e instituciones de beneficencia.

The Desert Square was the vital center of the town. It was the place of leisure and encounter of the workers of Baracaldo. It was there the municipal market, the offices of the Biscay Blast Furnaces, the railway station and, over all, the music bandstand, that contrasted with that atmosphere of cheap houses, cooperatives and charity institutions.
